Playing off the EcoBoost name, the new hybrid model is named PowerBoost and combines the 3.5 liter EcoBoost engine (mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission) with a 47 horsepower (35 kilowatts) electric motor, and a 1.5 kW-hr lithium-ion battery. The new hybrid model is capable of going an estimated 1,100 kilometres on one tank of fuel and can tow at least 12,000 pounds (when properly equipped). The hybrid model is available on all trims, XL to Limited. Being an icon of US car manufacturing, the F-150 is one of Ford’s most profitable vehicles, providing the financial firepower for other projects at the company, such as autonomous vehicle efforts like Argo AI.
